We stopped a hotel in orleans for eight hours of sleep before heading to the airport. Arrived with more than enough time and caught our planes to iceland and minneapolis. Finished reading ‘one day’ cedar’s silly romance novel that just about had me blubbering like a baby. It actually was remarkably good and funny, a sort of life story for people my age with many familiar character types and social and historical references. Guess cedar and i will have to see how the movie measures up. Dana picked us up at the airport and now we’re back home with a new kitchen and wood stove. Tomorrow we pick up our foreign exchange student.from one adventure to another.
Twelve hour drive through and around a traffic jam that stretched from the mediterranean to paris got us within striking distance of the airport. Hotel at knight. Notre it’s seven. Lord willin well make our two o’clock flight and be home around six.
Hike this morning with diane along coastal hills then train back to vernazza. Beach, read, swim, read, eat, kayak with cedar, swim, appetizers with diane on the terrace, shop, fish and chips. Tomorrow we take a six hour train to nice then start driving to paris.
What a great way to end a trip. After three hot days in rome we couldn’t wait to jump in the mediterranean, and the setting is perfect. Tiny rooms up a spiral staircase, view of the sea and the colorful walks of the town. Tomorrow didn’t and I will walk to some of the other towns while the kids hang out here. Our maybe well all enjoy a relaxing day b before trying to find a way to paris.
I woke up at 530 and spent the next five hours trying to figure out how we can get to paris for our flight. I should have given up and gone to the forum but didn’t. Diane went out for cappuccino. Late morning we decided to head toward st peters and trade cedars shirt for a better size. Had bad pizza for lunch and made it to vatican museum in time for 130 reservation. Went through at a brisk walk and spent about five minutes in the sistine chapel and another five in st peters. Cedar and diane went home while leif and I climbed the dome at st peters. Home at 430. I decided to run to the forum and palatine hill for a quick look around. Back at 615, supper in the square by the pantheon, listened to musicians and people watched by the fountain, then went home to bed. Good day that started bad.
In the morning I ran around the ancient city and took some detours to a couple domes I saw along the way. Later that morning we all walked to the ancient city but didn’t like the lines so we rented scooters and drove to via appia antica. Took us forever to find it and had a wild ride in the meantime. Stopped for bad sandwiches and cokes, then went home. I took the scooter to the train station to make reservations for our last two train trips but was dismayed to learn there were no open seats from genoa to paris to catch our flight home. When I was looking for the eurail office, a hustler saw me looking confused and tried to help me, but I eventually caught on. We decided to return the scooters and walk to the coliseum in early evening. Too late to get into forum and palatine. Went home for gelato on the square, then cooked pasta and sauce from the market. Wine on the roof.
We checked off a bunch of the sites around here yesterday, starting with the pantheon and head ing west to the river. Had lunch in a sidewalk restaurant and came home for a siesta before exploring east and north to the spanish steps and trevi fountain. We loved the careveggios and fountains and all the dime a dozen domes, including one fake one painted on a flat ceiling. Learned that it’s a lot cheaper to buy your gelato on the street and eat it outside than take advantage of the air conditioning. Came home for cheap chianti on the terrace.
