I love shopping at Mille Lacs Food Coop. It’s in the top 5 things about the Mille Lacs Lake area. (You can fill in the other four, but you have to include the coop in your top 5). For 30-some years (or more?) they’ve provide cheap, good, bulk, whole foods. In this era of obesity and couch potatoes, they were way ahead of the game.
I drove through Cambridge this morning and enjoyed a stop at another favorite coop, Mom’s in Cambridge. I used to shop there when they were in a strip mall on the east side of town and I was teaching at the local community college. Now they’re close to downtown in a great spot with a big store, next to a coffee shop that roasts its own beans and fantastic independent book shop. The prices of organice produce are better than those in a lot of the smalltown grocery stores in this part of the state.
I bought a book, The Golden Spruce by John Vaillant, who write The Tiger, which is in my top five of the last several years.
When I got home, as part of my training for Grandma’s Marathon in June, I jogged for 90 minutes on snowshoes, most of it on the frozen river while listening to a couple Fresh Air podcasts. It almost killed me (the jog, not the podcasts), but it was beyond satisfying.
I came back and ate two leftover chocolate chip banana pancakes with hummus and avocado (everyone makes fun of my food choices), then drank a brown ale and an oatmeal stout.
There’s nothing better than exercise, good food, and a couple good beers.
Hope your Saturday’s as good as mine.
